A pie bird is a hollow ceramic device, shaped like a funnel or bird with an open beak used for supporting and venting a pie. Although more of a collectors item in modern times, pie birds have been placed in the center of pies during cooking since Victorian times. They are used to prevent pie filling from boiling up and leaking through the crust by allowing steam to escape from inside the pie.
These pie animals were made by Bayle Owens. She applies clay slips containing iron and local clays and occasionally copper glazes to her animals, and they are fired in a kiln with salt. This all interacts to create a rich, warm surface.
