Persian Jar by Travis Owens

Persian Jar by Travis Owens
This is a quintessential form at Jugtown. The jars that inspired the first Jugtown Persian Jars were made in ancient Persia, likely in the area that is now Syria, and were observed by Mr. Busbee at museums and in publications documenting historic ceramics. This form has been made at Jugtown for over a century, and each maker interprets the shape and makes it their own. This one utilizes a copper based glaze, layered over Dogwood White at the top, and being fired in a heavily salted atmosphere in the wood kiln, the glazes become glassy, with crackling and wonderful breaks of red and burgundy. The dark clay used yields a warm salt glaze at the bottom, that compliments the colors as the glazes flow from the handles and rope. This one was made last year, and held until we had space in the Groundhog kiln this year, where this combination works best.
